from the Bible, from a manuscript book of prayers, viz.
(a) The Baptism.
(b) The Temptation.
(c) The Marriage at Cana.
(d) The Woman of Samaria.
(e) Christ in the House of Simon the Pharisee.
(f) The Raising of Lazarus.
■(g) The Agony in the Garden.
(h) The Betrayal.
(i) Christ before Caiaphas.
(k) Christ before Pilate.
(l) Christ before Herod.
(m) The Flagellation.
477. Fourteen engravings, coloured by hand, representing scenes
from the Bible, from a manuscript book of prayers, viz.:
(a) Christ shown to the people.
(b) Christ awaiting crucifixion.
(c) Christ nailed to the Cross.
(d) Christ crucified.
(e) The Deposition.
(f) The Lamentation over Christ’s Body.
(g) The Resurrection.
(h) The Descent into Limbo.
(i) The Three Marys at the Sepulchre.
(k) Christ appearing to the Magdalene.
(l) The Supper at Emmaus.
(m) The Incredulity of St. Thomas.
(n) The Descent of the Holy Ghost.
(o) The Last Judgment.
These cuts illustrate the earliest steps from the use ofminiature-painting to
the use of engraving’ for the decoration of books. For some years, both
before and after the invention of type-printing, engraved plates, with the
designs afterwards coloured by hand, were often used for the decoration of
mss., as an easier and doubtless cheaper substitute for original miniature-
paintings. The two imperfect Sets here exhibited have been actually so
used for the decoration of ms. books of prayers. The primitive craftsman
who produced them is known, from the subject of one of his principal
works, as the Master of the St. Erasmus.

This unknown master, usually named after a set of figured playing-cards
which is his most important series of works, is remarkable for his finished
