drawn up over the girdle. From his shoulders hangs a
cloak, called hy the Persians kandys, fastened by a circular
fibula on the right shoulder; on his feet are sandals ; at
his right side hangs the scabbard of his sword, ornamented
with a raised pattern. The two attendant priests are
similarly attired. (On the worship of Mithras, see
Lajard, Culte public et mysteres de Mithra, Paris, 1867 ;
and the notice of the Mithraic group, No. 163 of the
Grseco-Roman Gallery, in the Guide to the Grseco-Roman
Sculptures.) The composition in these Mithraic groups
seems borrowed from the analogous groups of Victory
slaying a bull, two of which have been already noticed.

(57.) Sun-dial supported on two lions' heads, which
spring from lions' feet.

Ht. 1 ft. 9 in. Width of upper part, 1 ft. 6J in.; of lower part,
1 ft. 2 in. Purchased in 1821. Ellis, T. G., II., p. 310.

(58.) Altar or Cippus, the front of which is ornamented
with sculpture in relief. Two birds are drinking from a
vase, above which is a festoon of laurel leaves hanging
from two bulls' skulls, bulcrania. Above each bull's skull
is a sash, lemniscus, hanging from studs, and between these
a circular flower. On one side of the altar is sculptured a
sacrificial ewer, praefericulum or oinoclwe, for pouring liba-
tions ; on the opposite side a patera or pliiale. The cornice
and base are modern.
