dowels, showing that the statue was originally composed
of more pieces of marble. On the right a piece of marble
probably completed the end of the cushion. On the left
may have been another figure associated with Zeus, as the
dowel holes extend to the base. The back of the chair is
left rough. Fair Eoman work.

Ht. 2 ft. 9J in. Discovered at Ephesus by Mr. J. T. Wood, in 1872.

(78.) A Square Altar, of the Eoman period, ornamented
on the four sides with reliefs, which probably have reference
to the worship of Isis.—In front is a figure kneeling on
both knees, having the ornament called by the Eg}7ptians
Haft on the head, and the garment called the shenti round
the loins, a necklace round the neck, and an armlet on the
upper part of the right arm. This figure holds forward
with both hands a small rectangular news or sacred shrine,
in which are two birds, probably intended for the kou-
kouphaor hoopoe. On either side of this figure is an ibis,
holding in its beak a branch. On the heads of these birds
are two marks apparently intended for Egyptian symbols,
but too indistinct to be made out, and on the bases are
various ornaments which, not having been understood by
the sculptor, cannot be clearly described. In some parts
of this composition the sunk relief (intaglio rilevato) used
in Egyptian sculpture is employed. On the left side of
the altar is the bull Apis, marked with a crescent on the
side. On the right side of the altar are two male figures,
probably priests of Isis, one of whom reads from a roll,
while the other holds a torch. At the back of the altar
Spring is represented as a youth crowning himself with
roses. On his right is a rose-tree; on his left a basket
full of roses.

Ht. 1 ft. 8 in. by 1 ft. 2± in. Mus. Marbles, X., pi. 51. T.
