side by side. The Comic Mask, which is shown in three-
quarter view, is crowned over the brow with a wreath
composed of the fennel giant, ferula, a plant sacred to
Bacchus. Eestorations : chin of the Tragic Mask and lower
corner of the slab.

(133.) Tragic Mask.—The hair raised over the fore-
head and arranged in stiff vertical tresses ; the eyes hollow.

(135.) Fragment from a Relief representing a
vintage.—Two oxen are drawing a cart, plaustrum, on
which is a large wine skin, uter, or askos. In front of the
oxen's heads has stood a male figure, of whom all that
remains is his right arm, holding a goad, with which he
guides the oxen. At their side is another figure, standing
under an archway, and advancing his right Land, as if
waiting at the door of his house for the arrival of the
cart. The upper part of this figure only is shown. His
drapery passes over his right shoulder, leaving the left
arm and side bare. A dog follows the oxen. The wheel
of the cart is a solid disk of wood, tympanum, strengthened
by cross-pieces. The uter is held in a sort of crate on the
bed of the cart. Sculpture rude, and late Eoman.

(136.) Group of Bacchus and Ariadne. — These
figures, though the heads of both are wanting, may be re-
cognised from the resemblance of this fragment to other
extant groups. Bacchus stands on the left; his right
arm, lower limbs nearly to the hips, and left forearm, are
