name in the second line, which is in the genitive, is that
of the patronus or dominus of the same gladiator. The date
on the third line marks probably the day on which the
tessera was given to the gladiator, who is designated in the
same line as sjpectatus, " approved," as having successfully
passed through a certain number of contests. It is in
this technical sense that Horace uses this word in the well
known line—

" Spectatum satis et donatum jam rude."

The fourth line fixes the year by giving the consuls' names.
The name both of the patronus and gladiator on the tesserce
is usually that of a slave, though in one or two specimens
the name of a libertus has been recognised. These tesserce
were probably distributed by the munerarius, or person by
whom the gladiatorial show, munus, was given.

(3) The abbreviation SP stands for sjpectatus. This is
proved by the discovery of a tessera at Aries, which reads
SPECTAT. for SP.
