Nos. 40-66 are tesserce classed under the general head
" Miscellaneous," because no satisfactory explanation of
them has yet been offered. It is quite possible that Nos.
44-58 may be theatrical tesserce, but there is no proof of
this. No.,60 may be a Christian amulet, and others may
be tesserce frumentarice, issued on a distribution of corn.
Nos. 61-66 are of stone. All these tesserce are probably
later than the commencement of the Christian era, and
many of them may be of the third century a.d.

No. 1. Irregular intaglio, intended probably to represent
the ground plan of a theatre, with the proscenium, tliymele

No. 5. Group of two Muses, draped as far as the hips.
The one on the right holds in her left hand a musical in-
strument, probably the lute or mandolin which occurs on
late Roman sarcophagi; her right arm passes round the
back of the other Muse, who with her left hand draws the
edge of a mantle across the body of her companion, turning
towards her ; her right hand rests on her hip ; both wear
tunics, ever which are mantles; the Muse on the right has
