and surmounted "by a cap (?), with an edge slightly turned
back; the top and back of the head and base of neck are
all cut off with a smooth joint, where other pieces have
been fitted on. Broken at base of neck. Ivory. Height,
2T\ in.

No. 19. Head of Aphrodite (?). Hair waved over the
forehead, and bound with a diadem. Very fine in style.
There is a joint at the base of the neck, which is pierced,
probably to fit the head on to a body. Right temple and
end of nose injured. Ivory. Height, If in. Cortona.
Castellani.

No. 20. Disk; on which is a female head in relief,
looking to the right, the hair rolled back from the face ;
the sockets of the eyes are empty, and have probably been
filled with vitreous paste. Ivory. Diam. 14 in. Calvi
(CaZes). Castellani.

No. 21. Horse's head, broken off at juncture with the
neck. The mane falls on the forehead in picturesque waves ;
the mouth is open. At the back are two holes where the
joint attaching the head to the neck has been riveted. Ivory.
Height, 2f in. Calvi. Castellani.

No. 22. Mask of Medusa ; the hair waved. On the top
of the head are two wings, in front of which two snakes'
heads project over the hair; their bodies form a frame to
the cheeks on each side, and their tails are knotted
together under the chin. Ivory. Diam. If in. Chiusi.
Castellani.

No. 23. Naked hunchback, crouching, with his right
leg bent under him ; the right arm hanging down by his
side, the left hand resting on the left knee. The head,
closely shaven, is very long in form, and leans a little over
the left shoulder; the nose is aquiline; the features sharp
and pointed, the brows contracted. An admirable speci-
men of naturalistic sculpture, which may be a work of
one of the later Greek schools. The circular pedestal on
which the figure rests is of the same material, and antique.
Ivory. Height, 4| in. T.

No. 24. Head of Hades, with long wavy hair, and
beard in rough ringlets. Nose injured. Back of head
and base of neck cut off with a smooth joint. Ivory.
Height, 2i in. Castellani.
