by a modern hand, is clad in a chiton with sleeves over
which is a diplo'idion fastened on the right shoulder, and
slipped off the left shoulder, the edge passing obliquely
across the bosom from left to right; the right arm is cut
off at the elbow. Present height, 5^ in. This type may
be compared with a statue in the museum at Lyons, De
Witte and Lenormant, Gazette Archeologique, 1876, pi. 31.

the flower, in her left the fruit of the pomegranate. A
broad band, ampyx, passes across the upper part of the
forehead; at either end of this band the hair is twisted
back in wavy masses. The bust, which is cut off at the
waist, is clad in a chiton with sleeves, over which is a
diplo'idion ; the folds of this garment or of a mantle sym-
metrically arranged fall in front of either shoulder ; a seam
is shown in the sleeve of the upper right arm. In the right
ear an earring like a stud. The back of the bust not
modelled. Later Archaic. Perhaps from Locri in Southern

granate fruit pressed against her bosom; with her left she
draws on one side the skirt of her drapery. Her hair,
arranged in two rows of formal tresses over her forehead,
falls in a mass of tresses behind, reaching nearly to the
waist, and cut off square; in front a single tress falls on
each shoulder; her head is crowned with a stephane, be-
hind which a veil falls on her shoulders. She wears a
talaric chiton with sleeves, over which is a diplo'idion with
pteryges fastened on the right shoulder, and passing
obliquely across the bosom so as to leave the left shoulder
and breast free; the left foot slightly advanced. The
back of this figure is modelled as carefully as the front.
