Arch. Nap. 1847, pi. 5, fig. 3, is perhaps from the opposite
corner of this slab. On the same plate of the work referred
to are five other fragments of terracotta reliefs, repre-
senting the same class of subjects as these Locri reliefs.
Height, 4f in.
(169) Hades carrying off Persephone, whom he has
placed on his right shoulder, clasping her round the waist
with his right arm ; his left clasps her round the knees. She
looks back to the left, her right arm bent as if beckoning;
her left extended to the right; she wears a talaric chiton,
over which is a diploidion; her hair is drawn back into a
knot behind. Hades, who is beardless, has a chlamys flying
from his shoulders behind, but is otherwise naked. On the
right of this group are folds of flying drapery within an
angle formed by a wide and a narrow ridge. The edge of
this fragment is perfect on the top and left side. Height,
5gr in. by 6-f in.
(170) Hades carrying off Persephone, whom he presses
against his waist; her left arm passes behind his head : in
her right hand she holds a cock. She wears a talaric
chiton, over which is a diploidion fastened on either shoulder;
her head is broken off. Hades has a chlamys hanging from
the shoulders; his hair, bound with a diadem, is arranged
in short close curls conventionally indicated by a granu-
lated surface; he moves to the left, and has placed his
right leg in his chariot, which is broken away all but the
back of the antyx. The lower limbs of both figures are
broken away. The edge of this fragment is complete on
the right side. Height, 4§- in. by 4i in. Arch. Zeit. 1870,
p. 77; Overbeck, Griechische Kunstmythologie, pi. 18,
No. 17; and vol. ii. (text) p. 592.
(171) Fragment of a similar group, showing the figures
of Hades and Persephone as low as the waist. Hades passes
his right arm behind Persephone, grasping her right upper
arm with his right hand; his left fore-arm is broken away ;
a mantle hangs from his shoulders ; his hair is arranged in
close clustering curls round his face. Persephone stretches
out her left arm behind his head, the fingers extended ; in
her right hand she holds a cock ; her hair is confined under
a close-fitting cap; behind her, on the extreme left, is part
of the antyx of the car of Hades. On the right the edge of
the terracotta is perfect. Height, 4|- in. by 3^ in.
(172) Fragment representing Hermes Kriophoros. He
