body over her left arm, and whose head is veiled, has her
right leg advanced as if moving to the left. On the left of
the figure playing on the tympanon is a square altar, beyond
which is seen a fluted column without a capital, perhaps to
indicate a temple. Athens.

(6) Leda with the swan, which she presses with her
right hand against her right hip. With her left hand she
holds up above her head the end of her mantle, which
passes round her back, falling over her left leg and thigh
and right arm. This figure is remarkable for the beauty
of the modelling. Athens.

(7) A draped female figure. Found in the temenos of
Demeter, Knidos. C. T. N. Newton, Hist. Disc. i. pi. 59,
fig. 3.

(8) Another. Mclos.

(9) Another. Kameiros.

(10) Another. Athens.

(11) Ariadne (?), clad in a talaric chiton and diploidion,
over which is a panther's skin, pardalis. The chiton is
painted red, with a broad border of blue and purple; on
her head is a wreath, of which the long ends hang clown
on each shoulder.

chiton and mantle; her head is crowned with a stephane
ornamented with a row of feathers set upright, the trophy

(13) A lelcythos, on the front of which is modelled in
relief the infant Dionysos standing within a frame of ivy
leaves, which seems to represent a bower; he wears a talaric
chiton clinging to the body; in his right hand is an
oinochoe; on his left arm he holds a cornucopia; on his
head is a high crown. The chiton of this figure is painted
white with stripes of red ; his hair, lips, and crown red ; the
base on which the figure stands is blue with a red stripe.
The colours are remarkable for their preservation. For
other vases of this class, see ante, p. 32, Nos. 249-252, and
Treu, Arch. Zeit. 1876, pp. 39-45. Capua. Castellani.

(14) A lelcythos, on the front of which is modelled in
relief a youthful head surmounted by wings; the hair,
which flows down on each side of the face, is painted
yellow, the wings blue; the head is set in a border painted
blue on each side of the face. These colours are remark-
able for their preservation ; the back of the lelcythos has an
