8. DOUBTFUL BUCCHERO FABRICS (h 231-240).
H 231. PART OF ANTEFIXAL ORNAMENT (?). Ht. 7! in. Naples, 1889. Drab clay
with dark grey slip resembling bucchero ware in appearance (the clay is partly blackened
through). Part of the projection at back remains.
Gorgoneion of archaic type, with curls over forehead and protruding tongue
and teeth.
H 232 BOWL. Ht. \'i in. Diam. 5i in. From excavations at Tharros, Sardinia, 1856 (tomb
25). Grey ware, with dark grey polish in interior, except centre.
Shallow form, with moulded rim and plain foot. Two rings scored round
centre.

grey ware, slightly polished ; in the interior, rings engraved round the centre.

Body swelling out below, with small foot ; plain rim and handle. Round
the body, moulded rings.
H 237. JUG. Ht. 45 in. Similarly acquired (tomb 1). Coarse grey ware, unpolished.
Pear-shaped body, with moulded lip ; handle of two ribs, prolonged along
the rim, the lower ends twisted. Projection on shoulder (broken), pierced with
small hole.
H 238. ASKOS. Ht. 6 in. Length gi- in. Christy Coll., 1865. Light brown ware, discoloured Plate 2v
by fire, surface worn away in places.
Body of double convex form and circular section, rising to a point at the
top ; long neck with spreading mouth and broad flat ring-handle adjoining ; flat
base. Round the top, concentric circles incised, from which radiate triple loop-
shaped markings as far as the middle of the body.
