the personification of Conseil is shown as a man in a long robe, with an open book in his right
hand and an owi in his left. The text justifies the identification of the bird with Counsel and
wisdom:

Pour cette mesme raison il tient de Fautre main un Chathuant, que les Ancients ont
consacre a la Deesse Minerve. Cet oiseau, comme disent les Naturalistes, cherche a re-
paistre de nuict, et voit clair dans les tenebres. Par ou les grands Princes et leurs Mini-
stres sont aduisez, d'employer leur soings et leurs veilles a la commune conseruation des
peuples, meditant la nuict ce qa'il faut resoudre le iour; a quoy 1'esprit est grandement
propre durant le silence et 1'obscurite, dont le Chat-huant est un Hieroglyphe11.
