This issue of the Bulletin du Musee National de Varsovie is fully devoted
to the memory of professor Stanisław Lorentz (1899-1991). To celebrate the
centennial of his birthday the commemorative book Przeszłość przyszłości
(The Past for the Futurę) was published*. Two exhibitions, Profesor Lorentz
(1899-1991) at the National Museum in Warsaw, and Stanisława Lorentza
walka o Zamek (Stanisław Lorentzs Campaign for the Castle) at the Library
of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, were also organised.
Stanisław Lorentz was the first Director of the National Museum in Warsaw
serving this post for over four decades (1936-1982) and playing the vital role in
developing the Museum’s prestige and rank. He was also a professor at Warsaw
University, where he initiated research on the art of Polish Classicism and
inspired many of his students to continue his work.
During his long life Stanisław Lorentz was always concerned with
preserving the cultural heritage of Poland and it’s monuments and museums.
He never ceased to be active in this field, even under the Nazi occupation of
Poland during World War II. Later on, in the difficult years 1945-1982 he
proved to be not only an outstanding scholar and art connoisseur but also
an excellent strategist and museum manager. In this respect, his finał and most
important achievement was to bring about the reconstruction of the Royal
Castle in Warsaw.
Looking back at his life we can see that he was able to achieve all his objectives
and to find great co-workers and followers. These people authored the articles
published in the Bulletin du Musee National de Varsovie. Unfortunately, we lack
the article by professor Aleksander Gieysztor, who had died before he managed
to write on the reconstruction of the Royal Castle in Warsaw after World War II.
