An expert with an unfailing research instincts, Lorentz saw the establishment
of classicism as an independent stylistic formation. This occurred thanks to the
new research by historians of art and culture in the 1970s. Taking advantage of
the methodological discoveries of the 1960s, they adopted Meyer Shapiro’s
approach to the definition of style, rather than the concept of style as a system
of formal relations.

In addition to Lorentz’s important contribution to the theoretical basis of
research on Polish art of the Enlightenment period, his work concerning
the reception of Palladianism in Polish architecture of the mid-eighteenth
century shouid be mentioned,21 as well as that on Polish-Italian relations in the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries,22 or his work examining the activity of
the distinguished classicist architect, Wawrzyniec Gucewicz. Two successiye
monographs on the most important buildings of classicism in Poland, the
Pałace in Jabłonna (Wrocław 1962), and the Primate’s Pałace in Warsaw
(Warsaw 1982), were exhaustive studies examining the artistic function and
content of urban and suburban residences.

In conclusion I would like to recall his most important work, on which he
worked as mentioned earlier, for 64 years. The architect Efraim Szreger was the
subject of Lorentz’s doctoral dissertation, accepted at the University of Warsaw

21 “II pallladianesimo nelParchitecttura polacca del secolo dell’Illuminismo”, Palladio, 1956, 1-3.

22 “Relazioni artistiche fra la Polonia e 1’Italia nel secolo dełPIlluminismo”, in ibid.
