Lorentz’s research in the field of Polish Enlightenment art constitutes the
most important portion of his extensive scholarly activity, but it by no means
exhausted his output. In addition there are works devoted to the topics of
Polish Renaissance sculpture; architectural conservation; documentation
connected with the campaign to rescue cultural items during the Second World
War (mainly the Royal Castle in Warsaw); and theoretical works from the field
of museum studies, the politics of culture, and International cultural
cooperation and exchange. In spite of the practical value and the wealth of
ideas in Lorentz’s works, he remains in his students’ memory above all an
outstanding expert on culture and art in the era of the Polish Enlightenment.
The wealth of source materials he analysed, his painstaking methodological
approach, and his reference to the broad comparative context of European art
- all this combined to give his books, essays, and articles an enduring value,
whose usefulness for expanding our knowledge of the art and culture of the
Enlightenment is undeniable.
