^lG- 82. The Two Leading Styles of Greek Architecture,
the Doric (A and B) and the Ionic (C and D)

^e Httle Doric building (B) is the treasury of the Athenians at Delphi
^ 74)> containing their offerings of gratitude to Apollo. On the low
g3se at the left side of the building were placed the trophies from the
?ttle of Marathon. Over them on the walls are carved hymns to Apollo
k h musical notes attached, the oldest musical notation surviving. The
^autiful Ionic building (Z>) is a restoration of the temple of Victory on
,e Athenian Acropolis. Contrast its slender columns with the sturdier
arts of the Doric style, and it will be seen that the Ionic order is a
0re delicate and graceful style. A and C show details of both styles.
