of tke Oountess^ tlian is displaced in tlie toml) of tlie Lari of Lancaster, wliicli
is constructed after a muck more elaborate design tban eitker of tlie otbers, and
wlmu in its perfect state, (as ma^ be seen from an engraving in 8andford'« History,)
wa8 probably, for tbe time of its erection, tbe most splendid example of its kind
in Lngland. In tbis, wliicli is mueb larger and more elevated tban eitber Valence's
or Eveline's, tbe surmounting canopy consists of tbree cinquefoil-beaded arcbes,
an expansive one in tbe centre, and two smaller lateral ones, separated b^ gradu-
ated buttresses, terminating in ricb pinnacles. loft^ pediment rises over eaeb
areb, and witbin tbe large trefoil of tbe principal one, on eaeb side, is an alto
relievo 6gure of tbe earl, armed eap-a-pee, in mail, on a cbarger, caparisoned in
tbe st)de of bis age. Um sides of tbe tomb are separated into compartments,
including small niebes and statues of regal personages, like tbose of Eveline's
tomb. On tbe covering slab is a eumbent bgure of tbe earl, cross-legged, in
ebain mail, and inclined somewbat to tbe rigbt, as tbougb looking towards tbe
bigb altar. Resides its otber adornments, tbe canopy was formerly surmounted
b^ octagonal pedestals, sustaining bgures of angels. Lbe under parts of eaeb

tomb were originally ornamented vitb small emblazoned vitb tbe arms and alliances ok

lbs monument ok vbo died in 1292, in Oanterbur^ (latbedral, is ver^
similar to tbat ok Eveline, in its general design, but ma^ be regarded as one remove beyond tbe latter in
gracekul decoration and boridness ok st^le. In tbis tbe pier buttresses, as well as tbe recesses in kront ok
tbe tomb, are enricbed vitb small statues: tbe under part ok tbe canopy is kormed into trekoil radiations;
and tbe mouldings botb ok tbe areb and pediment are embelbsbed vitb trailing vine branebes. ^Vitbin
