This vineyard was formed on an ancient
lava, probably a thin one, with a number
of caverns and crevices under it. The li-
quid lava entering into these caverns, soon
rilled them up^ and by degrees bore up the-
vineyard ; and the Jesuits, who every mo-
ment expected to see it buried, beheld with
amazement the whole field begin to movz
oss. It was carried on the surface of the
lava to a considerable distance; and though
the greatest part was destroyed, yet same
of it remains to this day^
We went to examine the mouth from
whence this dreadful torrent iiTiied; and
were surprised to find it only a small hole,
of about three or four yards diameter. The
mountain from whence it sprung, I think
is little less than the conical part of Ve-
suvius.
There is a vist cavern on the opposite
side of it, where people go to moot wild
