34-8 A TOUR THROUGH
and commanders have long vied with each
other.
We went this day to see the celebration
os their church service. It seems to be
more overcharged with parade and cere-
mony than what I have ever observed
even in any other catholic country. The
number of genuslections before the altar,
the kissing of the prior's hand, the hold-
ing up of his robes by the subaltern
priests, the ceremony of throwing incense
upon all the knights of the great cross,
and neglecting the poorer knights, with
many other articles, appeared to us highly
ridiculous ; and most essentially different
indeed from that purity and Simplicity of
worihip that constitutes the very essence of
true christianity ; and of which the great
pattern they pretend to copy, set so very
noble an example.
