triumphal car. From the size of it, one
would imagine it were for ever to remain
in the spot where it is erected ; but they
asTure us, it is to be drawn in triumph
through the city. It is indeed mounted
upon wheels, but it does not appear that
any force whatever can be able to turn
them.
I own my curiosity increases every day
to see the singular exhibition. The car is
already higher than most houses in Pa-
lermo, and they are still adding to its
height. But the part of the mow they
value themselves the most on, is the illu-
mination of the great church ; this they
affirm is superior to any thing in the
world ; the illumination of St. Peter's itself
not excepted. The preparations for it>
are indeed amazing. These were begun
about a month ago, and will not be finished
till towards the last days of the feast.
