But indeed I am much inclined to believe,
that not only mount iEtna, but the greatest,
part of Sicily, and almost the whole of the
circumjacent issands, have been originally
formed by subterraneous fire; but I shall
have an opportunity of speaking more
largely on this subje£t, when I give you
an account of the country round Naples.
I have observed lava, pumice, and tufa
in many parts of Sicily ; at a great distance
from iEtna ; and there are a variety both
of mountains and valleys that still emit
a hot vapour, and produce springs of boil-
ing water.
About a mile and a half to the west of
this city, at a small beach where we often
go a swimming, there are many springs of
warm water that rise even within the sea,
at the depth of five or six feet. We were
at first a good deal surprised to sind our-
