they had made it for my tormentors, in
revenge for the lodging they had given me.
But Claus, who was their leader, and in his
capacity of hero and commander-in-chief of
this band of incendiaries was bragging even
more than itsual, persuaded them that first
of all they must strengthen me with food and
drink, and added that he knew of bulky
barrels down in the wine-cellar, the contents
of which it was a pity should be wasted.
At this they all roared out to him that
he was quite right, they would be off to the
cellar and would finish what they had to
do here afterwards. Therewith they rushed
after Klett straight across the yard towards
the cellar, others came running from the
burning houses, and whichever way I looked
I saw nothing but monstrosities, robbery and
murder. I saw too that the mem belonging
to Langenau had made but weak resistance;
yes, that many of them had gone over to
the peasants and were fraternizing with
them.
The sight of all these horrors so affected
me that I stood petrified, it seemed to me
that the abyss of hell was yawning before
me, but, as I raised my eyes to the front
part of the building and saw the flames
darting out of the windows and shooting up
through the roof, I awoke out of this stupor.
»Sabine«! thought I, and unspeakable terror
filled my soul.
»How fares the gracious lady?« I asked
hastily.
»Ha, ha!« exclaimed the one-eyed man,
»what an amorous swain!« and then they all
laughed, smacked their tongues, and roared
