BenAbil. house. The earliest residences of the
Roman period in Northern Central Syria, judging
from a study of their details, are those of Ben-
abil, the ruined town, in the northern end of the
Djebel il-A‘la, in which one of the early bicolum-
nar tomb monuments was found. The ruins of
Benabil do not cover a great deal of space.

Among the ruins are the homes of twenty-six
Druse families, two of which are built within the
ancient houses; the others are built of ancient fragments. The ruins embrace three
well-preserved houses, all of the same general style, a small tower, and a large
number of completely dilapidated buildings, none of which can be identified as a
church. The largest of the three preserved houses will serve as an example of the

domestic architecture
of this site. This
house, which stands
near the center of the
group of ruins, con-
forms, in plan and
arrangement, to the
type which prevailed
throughout this entire
region for a number
of centuries. The
plan and restoration
(Fig. 26) show an
oblong structure of
two stories, the lower
story divided, by a
solid wall, into two
nearly equal compart-
ments, one of which

is spanned longitudinally by two arches of a wall. The end walls of the house pro-
ject 011 the side which forms the fagade, and between these walls runs a two-story

Portion of south wall and portico of house at Benabil.
