Plate II

4. Statue of calcareous stone. Height, 4 feet 6^ inches. Found on the spot west
of the temple (Golgoi). Archaic statue of a man standing, the face bearded. Surface much
worn and injured; back unfinished; lower portion, from above the knees downwards, missing
The right arm is folded across the body; the left arm hangs by the side; both hands are
clenched. The beard is merely blocked out. The head-cloth, or wig, is of an Egyptian
character, as are also the dress and ornaments. The dress consists of a close-fitting garment,
with short sleeves, and a sort of kilt suspended from a belt. The ornaments consist of
earrings of spiral shape (similar to many in gold and silver found at Curium and Amathus),
and a broad necklace or collar. The action of the hands is that of Egyptian figures, hold-
ing a sceptre and emblem of life, and the statue is apparently a portrait of a Cypriote
prince. About the seventh century B.C.
