Plate IX,

ii. Statue of calcareous stone. Height, 3 feet 55 inches. Found in the temple
(Golgoi).

Archaic statue, standing. Lower portion, from above the knees, wanting. The whole
surface in a very good state of preservation, showing here and there faint traces of red
color; the back flat and roughly finished. The arms hang down by the sides, with clenched
hands. The position of the thighs and drapery shows that the left leg was advanced.
The hair, or wig, is disposed in ridges across the top of the head, falling in heavy tresses
on the shoulders behind. The figure wears the usual tight-fitting short garment, without
sleeves; a kilt suspended from a belt around the waist. On the front of the kilt a double
asp, with globes over the heads. Large spiral armlets on the upper part of the arms. Traces
of red color all over the surface are visible, particularly on the lips and belt; light traces of a
necklace, or collar, are also brought out by the application of a wet sponge, showing red and
yellowish color; the same two colors are seen on alternate sections of the belt and alternate
sections of the middle band of the kilt, on the asps and the globe. The features are
Cypriote; the form is massive, and is a fine example of Phcenico-Egyptian style and
treatment.
