PLATE XLIV. CONTINUED.
348. Red terra cotta. Height, 3% inches. Found at same place as last.
Fragment of figure of almost exactly the same description as No. 346, but much more
rudely made in every way; on a lower base; and the body leaning forward a little. Covered
with red color. Head and neck broken away.
349. Red terra cotta. Height, 7^ inches. Found at same place as last.
Naked, corpulent male figure, in nearly the same posture as No. 346, but seated on a low
divan (which forms the base), one arm of which he grasps in his left hand. Hair short and curly,
What seems to be the fragment of a serpent twines about the right ankle. Right arm broken
away at the shoulder; a large portion broken away from the middle of the base up to the loins
in front, carrying away the left foot; by the same fracture also much of the back is broken
away. Features somewhat abraded.
350. Buff terra cotta. Height, 2% inches. Found at same place as last.
Youthful hermaphrodite, seated on the ground (an oval base), with the knees bent so that
the left foot is beneath the body, the right a little away from it. The left hand rests easily on
the ground; the right, upraised, with arm extended, holds a corner of the mantle, and seems to
be shaking it in sport at a shaggy dog with curled tail, which is jumping up above the right foot
of the figure. Hair in a roll over the forehead; a long wavy tress also visible behind on the left
shoulder. A large peplos or mantle covers the back of the head, falling and spreading behind,
forming a sort of cushion beneath the figure, as well as a quasi curtain falling in folds from the
extended right arm. Finely wrought in good Greek style. Features and right hand somewhat
abraded. A crack in the base.
351. Dark buff terra cotta. Height, 3H inches. Found at the Salines near Larnaca.
Winged Eros, seated on an oval base, in nearly the same posture as No. 347, but the
right hand holds a bird (duck ?) on the knee. Drapery loosely wrapped about the left arm below
the shoulders, covering in its folds both legs and feet, but not the right arm. Good Greek style.
Hair colored reddish brown. Tip of left wing broken away ; slight chippings about the base.
