Plate LIIL
Urn-Handles, Lotus pattern. Bronze. From Curium. When found the vessel to which
these handles were attached, was embedded in the earth. One handle only was found at first, and
the diggers attempted to extricate the whole without digging sufficiently. The weight of the earth
inside was too great, and as a result the vessel was damaged irreparably.
i. Total height n^ inches. Spring (from body of vase) 534 inches. Spread (between
centres) jys inches. Lotus, 6 inches high; petals spread, 7 inches.
Mate of the following. Entirely detached. Shows inside of foot, the side originally
attached to vase. The end of one of the rivets by which it was fastened is still visible to the
right.
2. Total height 1134 inches. Spring 534 inches. Spread 7^ inches.
Shows method of fastening to original vase or urn, part of which is preserved. The base
of the lotus is 2% inches above the rim of the urn. Apparently the handles were cast in a sand
mold.
