two protestant parties fraternized in 1822. Though this
church was less injured (upon the whole) than other
buildings, when the town was destroyed (1693), it suffered
great injury in 1737, Aug. 30, when a flash of lightening
destroyed the fine peaked roof of the steeple it once had,
as it appears by earlier drawings. Both the interior and
exterior of this church are richly ornamented with monu-
ments of eminent citizens and teachers in the university.
The choir contains the family-vault of the family of De-
genfeld, which encloses two children of Charles Lewis,
by Louisa Degenfeld; there also rest the remains of many
distinguished Palatine statesmen, of Paul of Bachenberg
(f 1680), Marcus zum Lamm (j- 1606), Otto of Griinrod,
Marsilius of Inghen, Rector of the university, (j- 1396),
Jasper Agricola, Peter of Will. Xylander (Woodman)
known as a learned commentator and translator of the Greek
classics, Jacob Mycillus, a celebrated poet and. scholar,
and of Lotichus Secundus, the celebrated Palatine historian
Marquard Freher, and others. On the churchyard you
behold the graves of the celebrated Sylburg, the no less
famous Olympia Fulvia Morata, a celebrated Italian lady,
who used to read lectures before a crowded public, but
died when she was scarcely 27 years old (1555); of the
historian Posselt, ami others. Jerom of Prague, the
fellowsufferer of Huss, was also received here as doctor in
philosophy, and defended his theses before a numerous
assembly.
The late lutheran Parish-church of the suburb, situated
in the main-street, was built (1659) under Charles Lewis,
who called it Providence- church, which denomination
has been resumed since the union of the two protestant
parties. This church suffered also much injury in the
French war (1693)], but was soon repaired, and a steeple
