IV. THE CASTLE.*

Wb have already observed, that distinct mention of the
castle of Heidelberg occurs first in the hereditary treaty

* Drawings, representing the castle, and prospects of it in
the most different points of view, will be found in the writings
alleged in the note of section II.
See the collection of superbe drawings, done by Meyer, and
in particular, the following views contained in it:
1) View of the Castle of Heidelberg, from the southside',
point of view : the chessnut plantation, above and opposite to,
the castle. Evening - illumination. Engraved by Hegy.
Here you have a full view of the ruins, and of the splendour
of the environs of Heidelberg.
2) Flew of the Castle of Heidelberg, taken from the road to
the Wolfs-well. Point of view: a short distance from the se-
cond curve of the road , eastwards from the castle. Morning-
illumination. Engraved by Rordorf. View across the Neckar, and
into the plain, towards the Vogesian mountains; beyond it, the
friendly Neuenheim, at the foot of the Heiligenberg', of the
castle: the blown-up tower, the facade of the Knight's hall etc.
3) View of the Elizabeth-gate, in the garden of the Castle
of Heidelberg. Station: at the entrance of the garden-gate, to-
wards the Mountain-town. Morning-illumination. Engraved by
Meichelt.
The memorial of the love of a noble ruler (Elector Frederick V),
dedicated to his consort, put up underneath lofty trees and
blooming shrubs, together with other valuable monuments of
the Palatine history.
4) Internal view of the Castle of Heidelberg, taken in the
yard of the cooper of the Castle. Morning-illumination. En-
graved by J. J. Meyer.
Here you behold the Gothic vault of the columns of granit,
taken from the castle of Charles the Great, at Ingelheim, the
building of Robert, being the oldest part of the castle etc.
