the vogesian mountains, into the Elsass, Even the
naked eye can espy Strasburg, when the air is clear; by
means of a glass, you can even distinguish the Minster
of that city. In the south the prospect is bounded by
the high mountains of the Black Forest, by numerous
groups of forehills and promontories , enclosing the valley
of the Murg, The eye wanders south-eastward and east-
ward over the Kraichgau , far into the countries of Ho-

thence back to Heidelberg, by the horseroad. Good walk-
ers may proceed from the Kohlhof, on a romantic path
to Bammenthal (1 1/a league) and thence, by a charming
meadow-ground, to Neckargemund (1 league) and thence,
along the banks of theNeckar, return to Heidelberg in two
hours. There are also two roads that take you from the Kai-
serstuhl to Neckargemiind and the Wolf swell. If you are not
at leisure to make this excursion, you should not, at least,
neglect taking a walk to the Wolfswell, especially as
the road to it, from the castle, can be performed in half
an hour, is fit for carriages, and everywhere commands
