PREFATORY NO

!

the trouble of reference would be rather increased than diminished. Of tire.most
important Regulations and Acts, an analysis is given under their appropriate heads.
Regulation XV. of 1853, which modihes the rules for appeals to the Sudder Dewanny
Adawlut, having been received in England after the completion of the index, the
analysis of that enactment forms a supplement to the general index, at page 518.
When the large amount of the matter which has been dealt with and the intricacy of its
several parts is considered, the Editor does not allow himself to hope that no passages
which ought to have been noted by marginal reference have escaped, or that po rule
that has been superseded is left in the collection. Should any such instances be
discovered, it is hoped that the various modes of reference adopted, will prevent the
public olhcer from being misled. The Editor feels assured that he will be the most
readily pardoned for any such oversight by those whose duties have made them the most-,
conversant with the code and its intricacies, and who can best appreciate the dihicultie!^'
of the task which has been performed. ^
