General
pottah.
ryots only whose cultivation was carried on agreeably to the practice
termed mootry, and no other, were to specify the amount of the rent
annexed to their pottahs under that single head only ; whilst, in instances
in which ryots cultivated not only on mootry but also on nukdy and betay
agreements, this form of pottah also prescribed how the particulars of the
zeyl were, under such circumstances, to be subjoined, at the same time
that it comprehended under the several heads of cultivation, a specifica-
tion of the denomination of begah, in order that as all the three descrip-
tions of begahs particularized in Clause Third were more or less in use in
the province, it might be left to the option of the malguzars, and ryots to
adopt in their engagements whichever of these three standards they might
prefer, the aumeens being required only to see that the description of
begah agreed on should in every instance be specified.
The following is a translate of the general form of pottah
with which the aumeens were furnished:
form of " A pottah of engagement and stipulation in the name of —-,
according to the zeyi, without abwab or serf. The fota or rent for the
entire year of the cultivation shall be taken bilmokta, or according to one
rate ; and exclusive of that, neither a daam or dhirrn shall be taken.
" ZEYL, or annexed specification of RENT.

" Is?. Mootry 12 begahs (either of 3 dera
ilahee, or pergunnah begahs, or dherawat or
estimated begahs), at 3 rupees 2 annas per
begah, Rs. 37 8 0.
" 2?z(L Kwyraur, &c. (being for the more
valuable articles of cultivation) 13 begahs
(whether of 3 dera ilahee, or pergunnah
measurement, or dherawat) viz.
Sugar-cane 10 begahs, at 5 ru-
pees 1 anna per begah. 50 10 0
Tobacco 2 begahs, at 6 rupees
per begah .. 12 0 0
Moolee or vegetables 1 begah,
at 2 rupees 1 anna per begah... 2 10

And where, from the change in the culti-
vation, a new pottah shall become necessary,
it shall be granted according to the rates of
the two last years, with the privity of the
canongoes, according to the shirabundy, or
established rates of the pergunnah, and I
(the zemindar or farmer) shall certainly not
object to give a pottah.

or appraisement, either at half-and-half, or
9 to 7, or 5 to 2, or 2 to 1, according to the
local usage, and the money assessment there-
on to be according to the current market
price, as fixed for each harvest by Govern-
ment .
" Purtee, and keel, and jungle land, ac-
cording to the good-will of the parties, either
on a nukdy or betay engagement."
