Lucia. Later in life he settled in Pisa, where
he died. We find him in this city in 1427, when,
with Donatello, he became surety for Maestro Pippo
di Gante, S., to Giuliano di Colino degli Scarsi da
S. Giusto, notary, and later “ Operaio ” of the
Duomo of Pisa, for the chapel that Maestro Pippo
was executing for him in the church of the Carmine.
In the same year C. painted for Giuliano the frontal
of the altar “ di rosso ombrato molto bello,” with
a fringe around and a medallion (compasso) con-
taining a half figure of S. Giuliano.

Borgo S. Sepolcro. B. 15—, d. 1566. P. p. of
Giulio Romano and assistant of Raphael; a friend
of il Rosso Florentino, m. of Cristofano Gherardi.
R. was employed with other p.’s of the school of
Raphael in painting the palace of the Vatican. He
was an assistant of Vasari, in Rome, and in carrying
out the decorations for the marriage festivities of
Duke Alessandro de’ Medici with Margherita
d’Austria (1536) in Florence. He drew cartoons
for tapestries from Bronzino’s designs, and also
worked with the Master when Bronzino was painting
for the Duke of Urbino.

Canonico Baldanza, in his work on the cathedral of
Prato, mentions a portrait of the Proposto, Pier
Francesco Ricci, painted by M. This portrait was
ordered of the P. by Capitular Deliberation, under
date Nov. 18, 1573, and is now in the sacristy of
the Duomo. Baldanza describes M. as a Florentine
who had res. for a long time at Prato. The Delle
Colombe belonged to the Quarter of Sto. Spirito,
Florence.

P. In 1300 he was partner with Bertino della
Marna. m. of Manetto di Giovanni, placed with
C. on July 29, 1295, by his brother Amadore, to
learn the art of painting for four years. On Aug. 26
of the same year C. placed Grazianello di Giovanni
with Chele di Pino, P., to be taught the art for a
like period. On Nov. 14, 1300, Vanni di Salvi of
the pop. S. Reparata placed his son Compagno
with C. and Vanni di Bertino della Marra, to
work for them “ alia pittura ” and to be taught
painting for one year, at a salary of 25 lire, to
be paid pro rata by C. res. in pop. S. Michele
Visdomini.

poet. mat. ante 1581 ? A.D. 1589. (Drawn for
Consul del Corpo, 1581 (April), for which office he
was also drawn in 1592 (Aug.), his name, apparently,
not having been placed on the list of Academicians.
He was then absent from Florence. Drawn for
Consul 1628 (Aug.), sick; 1633-4 (Jan.), served;
1637 (Aug.), exempt for age. It may be noted
that A. only completed the payment of his matricu-
lation fees in 1637. p. of il Cigoli, but more a
companion of his master than a scholar; m. of
Pietro da Cortona,* Giovan Battista Stefaneschi,*
a friend of Matteo Rosselli; studied the works of
Raphael and of Correggio. A. worked in Rome
and at Cortona, where he painted two pictures of
the Virgin Mary; he was a good anatomist, had
studied the principles of architecture and of per-
spective, modelled, drew in pastels, and was so
excellent a copyist of the old masters that several
of his copies sold as originals and at high prices.
A. was buried in the church of S. Ambrogio, Florence.

Vanni di Bertino della Marra. He was apprenticed
for one year in Nov. 1300, and, as he was to receive
a salary of 25 lire, must have had some previous
instruction in art. (v. Miscellanea Fiorentina, II.

Transone (Fermo), b. c. 1525, d. Nov. 12, 1574.
P.S. wr. p. of Michelagnolo in Rome. A. painted
some pictures at Ripa Transone. He was drowned
on his return from Macerata, whither he had been
sent on an embassy, but on what occasion appears
to be unknown. A. wrote a life of Michelagnolo
which was first published in 1553 (very rare). There
are also later editions, published in the eighteenth
and nineteenth centuries.

(da Monte San Salvano). P. mat. 1585 [A.D., R.
57, c. 17]. Began to pay fees Jan. 21, 1590/1 [id.
27, c■ 37]- Matteo’s name is found in the account-
books of the A.D. in the years 1592/3, 1594, 1602/3,
1606/7, 1609, 1610/11, 1618, 1633/4. On Oct. 13,
1616, Matteo and Filippo Furini valued a portrait
of a gentleman which they considered worth “ 8
ducati di moneta ” [id. 64 ad an.]. He had two
sons, Jacopo and Piero, both P.’s, whose notices
belong to the seventeenth century.
