WESTMINSTER ABBEY. 49,

however, she restored Bonner to the see, she renewed the grant of the land to it,
and obtained the confirmation of the pope.

Daceivrth, Dackivrth, Dakeword, and Dakenword, now Datchworth, in Hereford-
shire, which Edward the Confessor confirmed: in his charter it is described as
containing four hides of land and one rod. That king also granted it certain
privileges and exemptions, as appears by his letters directed to Lonord, Bishop,
and Beorn, Earl. It likewise received the confirmation of William the Conqueror.
This place continued in the abbey till the dissolution; and, after being subjected
to the same changes as Holtvell, was aiso finally granted to the Bishop of London.

Watton, in the same county, is said to have contained four hides and a half.
It was confirmed by Edward the Confessor, who granted it several exemptions.

Chillington, or Shillington, containing three hides of land, was confirmed also
by Edward the Confessor. William the Conqueror is likewise said to have granted
to the abbot of Westminster the privileges of the chase in his lands at Chillington,
and five houses.

King Edgar receives the gratitude of the monks for having presented to this
church several splendid presents, to the value of fifty shekels of gold, as well
as the rebuilding a great part of the monastery some time previous to his death in
the year 995.

Dunstan, however, according to the charters which pass under his name, not
only instigated that king to become such a distinguished patron to the Church of
Westminster, but was himself also a considerable benefactor to it. In one of these
charters, he grants many privileges to this monastery; exempts it from the juris-
diction of the bishop of London, and anathematizes all his successors in that see,
as well as all others, who should presume to infringe its rights: lastly, he releases
it from the tax of Rome-scot, or Peter's pence; after the examples of the Kings
OfFa, Kenulph, and Edgar.
