three rods, and twenty-five acres.

King Edward also gave many vestments, as well as suits of furniture, which
he offered on the altar; with holy vessels and splendid decorations, requisite for
all solemn occasions of worship or public ceremony, and adapted to the character
of the church.

BENEFACTORS IN THE TIME OF EDWARD THE CONFESSOR.

Hugoline, the chamberlain or steward, and distinguished favourite of this
prince, was one of them, as appears by the grant of Chelmer Forest, which
concludes with this singular teste :

Witness the Bishop Wolstan,
And Book, Alured, many on;
And Swein, of Essex, our brother,
And taken him many other;
And our steward, Hugoline,
That besought me for him.

He gave three rods of land at Islip, and a chapel. He is also said to have
prevailed on the king to give certain other lands, which were afterwards con-
firmed in the king's name.

This Hugoline is the person whom Flete describes in the following honour-
able terms: " Hugolinus nobilis, principalis Sancti Regis Edwardi cubicularius,
" semper Deo devotus, et praedicto regi inter omnes hujus regni proceres, miles
" fidelissimus." He was buried in the cloisters of this church. Weever calls it
an obscure place; but on the rebuilding of it by Henry III. his body was taken up,
with those of Queen Ethel goda, Eadwine the abbot, and Sulcardus the historian, and
