Leoftan, portreve of London, and his wife, gave to this convent, for their,
souls'health, land and a wharf in that city; which King Edward the Confessor
confirmed by charter, directed to Alfward, Bishop, &c.
Such were the benefactions granted to his monastery by King Edward the
Confessor, as well as by several of his pious subjects, who were proud to follow
their sovereign's example.
King Edward also granted to the chapter of this church, free liberty over all
their lands, wherever they lay, with sacc and socc, toll and theam, infangtheof,
grithbrech, hamsken, and forestall*; and that no one should have any power over
their lands or tenants, but the abbot and his convent: which great charter of
liberties is directed to all his bishops, earls, and thanes, in those counties where
these lands lay-f-.

determining causes, and imposing fines and amerciaments, by the lord within his manor.—Socc, the
power possessed by the lord of holding courts and trying causes in his" barony.—Toll, the liberty of
buying and selling within the precincts of a manor; or tribute or custom paid for passage ; or a con-
sideration given for exemption from that tribute.—Theam, the power granted to a baron over his
tenants or villains, and their possessions, &c.—Infangtheof signified the power of trying thieves
taken in any one's manor or liberty.—Grithbrech, a violation of the peace.— Hamsken, a power
