church, and the army, all partook of his bounties: and when he ordered the
body of the Confessor to be placed in a chest of stone of great value, he
naturally expected that such an act of devout regard to the remains of his
predecessor, would ingratiate him with the people, by whom the deceased
Edward was held in the most profound veneration.

By his first charter to this church, in which he mentions his victory over
Harold, and the ornaments he had bestowed on it, he confirms the gifts of his
predecessors, and the liberties which they had granted to it*

By other charters he especially confirms the charter of liberties granted by
Edward the Confessor, prohibits the Bishop of London from having access to it,
and renews the establishment of their liberties in London.

Several other particular charters confirm the gifts and liberties of Gystlepe,
now Islip, in the county of Oxford, where Edward the Confessor was born; the
manor of Mcreton; of land at Yevena, Burnham, and Cypenham, with its appurte-
nances ; the manor of Overslea; Lesnes, with its lands, meadows, and liberties;
land at Chelchea; the manors of Aldenham and of Agyte; land at Wormlea; the
manors of Kilvedune and Mulesliam; Persor and Dorhurst; the manor of Tudding*
ton; St. BotolpKs gate; Walton and Dake?iwood. To the Abbot Vitalis, the
church lands in Worcestershire, which Wulstan, the Bishop, the Abbot of Eves-
ham, and Rumbald, the Chancellor, had released from certain tenures, &c. Ail
these grants are confirmed, with liberties and privileges, in seventeen charters;
some of which are written in Latin, and others in Saxon.

These confirmations are succeeded by the following benefactions from the
king himself*

In consequence of his desire to form a forest, and finding Windlesore, or
Windsor, then a possession of the Abbey of Westminster, a very convenient spot
