acute angle at which the partial light struck upon the
objects gave a force to the forms by the depth of the
shadows, and the general effect must have been one
of great richness, subordinate indeed to the more im-
portant sculptures of the pediments and the metopes,
but quite consistent with the repose and quiet of the
architectural arrangements of that part of the building.

The design of the artist has been to illustrate the
most remarkable and interesting circumstances which
usually marked the great Panathenaic festival, and for
the accomplishment of this purpose he has represented
the procession of worshippers to the presence of the
deities or their statues. These deities are seated at
the east end, over the great entrance of the sacred
chamber, and the procession advances in two lines
commencing at the south-west corner, one line pro-
ceeding eastward along the south side, the other
northward along the west end, and then, turning
the corner, eastward along the north side; at the east
end are seen the heads of the two lines advancing
in opposite directions towards the deities in the
centre.

The Panathensea was a festival celebrated at Athens
