same persons was committed the superintendence of
the games and distribution of the prizes, amongst
the most distinguished of which were golden crowns
bestowed in face of the assembled states, while the
public heralds announced the names of those upon
whom this high honour was conferred. The closing
ceremony of this sacred and splendid festival was an
act of benevolence and mercy; for the chains of the
prisoners were broken, and the captive was set free.30
