PLATE XI.

[ Length 3 f. 6. in. No. 25*. ]

This plate represents a cast taken from a fragment which has
been dug up at Athens within these few years ; the subject of it
does not appear in Carrey's drawings, but it is engraved by
Sluart, vol. ii. c. i. pi. xviii. who, in his general arrangement,
pi. xxx. places it immediately before and in connexion with the
group in our plate IX. B.; from an examination however of Carrey's
drawings there can scarcely be a doubt but that he is incorrect,
and the exact situation of the slab is therefore left uncertain. From
the position of the charioteer, leaning back, and sustaining him-
self by the reins, it is evident that he has some difficulty in res-
training his steeds, and preventing them from breaking into a
swifter pace than would be in accordance with the decorum of

from those before described ; he is armed with his helmet and
shield, but not clothed with the cuirass; whether this is merely
the fancy of the artist, or whether it represents some pe-
culiarity which would be well understood by the Athenians,
there are not any means of ascertaining. In the absence of
the cuirass, the form of the chiton, which was usually worn
under armour, becomes disclosed. It seems to resemble that
garment which the Romans called colobium, which descended
about as low as the knees, and was generally rather longer behind
than before; it was sometimes furnished with sleeves, and some-
times without them. In this instance it is only fastened over one
shoulder, though it was usually worn over both; but artists were
fond of allowing one of the fastenings to become loose, as it
afforded them an opportunity of exposing more of the naked
