march, but in the menial office of holding the horses heads, till it
is the will of the charioteer to proceed.

The workmanship of these slabs is exceedingly good and skil-
ful ; all the parts are marked with accuracy and intelligence ;
slight and rapid, but with the precision of a master. It will be
remarked that there is not the slightest appearance of reins or
harness of any kind; nor does an accurate examination of the
marble lead to the discovery of any rivet holes whereby metal
would have been attached. It appears quite certain that metal
harness was used in some parts of this frieze, and it may therefore
be concluded that the appearance of harness was kept up through-
out its whole extent; and we do not see how that could have
been accomplished, upon these and many other slabs, but by the
use of colour.
