PLATE XXXV.

[ Length of one portion, 5 f. 9 in.; of the other, 1 f. 7 in. Old Nos. A 87, A 88.

New Nos. 60, 61. ]

This plate represents the subject of an entire slab, and probably
the end also of the first on the southern side of the temple ; of
the side of this last slab we have neither the original nor a cast.

The first figure seems to be occupied in putting on the bridle,
his right hand being employed in adjusting the headstall over the
ears of the horse. If such be the action, it does not appear to be
performed in strict accordance with the instructions of Xenophon ;
who expressly directs the groom to approach on the near side of
the horse. (i In order that the groom may put on the bridle
properly, let him first approach the horse on the near side ; then
let him throw the reins round his head, place them on the top of
his shoulder, raise the headstall in his right hand, and bring up
the bit in his left.1" The groom is certainly here represented on
the offside of the horse, but in other respects he seems to be acting
according to rule, and, at least, attending to the prudent caution
of Xenophon, never to place himself in front or behind a horse,
as that would give the animal too great an advantage over him.2
The next person is fastening on his sandal, while his horse is
standing quietly by his side; the action is precisely the same
as that which we have already seen in plate XXVI,3 but there is
a very slight variation in the costume, that figure having his head
covered with a helmet, while this has the Thessalian hat hanging at
his back; both are clad in the chlamys fastened with a round but-
ton, and both are very well executed, but the size and proportions
of the figure upon this slab are more nearly upon a par with those
