Demostrate, wears this garment in a matronly manner, having
thrown a portion of it over her head, and drawing it forward with
her left hand, which is partially enveloped in its folds. The at-
tendants, with their hands raised to their heads, indicate, by their
positions, their sorrow for the loss of the departed.

Boeckh, vol. i. p. 534. No. 936. and Osann, p. 118. both read
KAAAISTP, and conjecturally supply AT02, which they suppose
to have become illegible. It is very true that the last letter has
in some lights very much the appearance of P, and, if such were
really the case, some others must be supplied to make a proper
name; but, upon a very careful and attentive examination of the
monument, it will be clear that the supposed P is in fact Q,,
and that there never have been any additional letters; conse-
quently the name is really Callisto. The person bearing this
disputed name has been described as a young man, but erro-
neously, for though the female form is not so distinctly developed
as in Demostrate, whom we suppose to be the mother, yet it is as
much so as in the two attendants; and, if we examine those figures
on similar monuments which are undoubtedly male, as Poly-
stratos, fig. 4. Ermodoros and Erasippos, pi. XXX. and others,
pi. XXXII. we shall see that they are without the chiton, whereas
this garment is always worn by females.

This is a solid sepulchral urn, on which are represented five
figures, composing a family group bidding a final farewell to the
departed, to whose memory the urn was erected. The party
consists of a female seated, holding by the hand an armed war-
rior and an infant, who are standing before her, probably her
