PLATE XLII.
Upon this plate are represented four Amphorae or wine
vessels, brought from Athens by the Earl of Elgin. They are of
various forms and dimensions.
Fig. 1. is three feet one inch high, and contains eight quarts,
Imperial measure.
Fig. 2. is three feet six inches high, and contains twenty-four
quarts.
Fig. 3. is three feet four inches high, and contains thirty-one
quarts and one pint.
The form is unusual, swelling out towards the base instead
of tapering towards the point, after the ordinary manner. It is
stamped upon the outer edge of the orifice with letters which
appear to read GH05LDM, the last letter having a cross through
the middle, and probably intended for AM. From this it appears
that these Amphorae, though found at Athens, were of Roman
manufacture, or at least made by a Roman workman.
Fig. 4. is three feet two inches high, and contains twenty-seven
quarts. It is more of the usual form.
