PLATE LIII.

Fig. 1. ALTAR.

A votive altar with the following dedicatory inscription to Bona
Dea Anneanensis.

C • TVLLIVS • HESPER
ET • TVLLIA • RESTITVTA
BONM DEAE ■ ANNEA
NENSI • SANCTISSIM
DONVM
POSVERVNT

On the left side of the altar is a prsefericulum, and on the right
a patera. This altar was found on the banks of the river Anio,
not far from Tivoli. The river Anio falls into the Tiber at a little
distance from Rome. It was sometimes written Anien 1 and it is
therefore probable that the word ANNEANENSI, in this inscrip-
tion is used instead of ANIENENSI. This inscription is pub-
lished by Orell. Inscript. Latin. Collect, no. 1516, from Donatus.

Height 1 ft. 7f in. Width of top 14 in. Depth 8| in.

Fig. 2. ALTAR.

A votive altar, sacred to Apollo, as appears from the accom-
panying symbols. In front is a wreath or festoon of laurel leaves
and berries, suspended from the corners of the cornice. Upon it

1 Virg. Mn. vii. 683. Stat. Sylv. lib. i, 3, 20, and other authorities quoted by
Nibby, Carta d' intorni di Roma, p. 156.
