PLATE LVII.
Fig. 1, 2. PROFILE BUSTS OF PHILOSOPHERS.
A medallion representing in profile the bust of an unknown
Greek philosopher. The head is without a beard, the hair is very
short, and the breast is covered with drapery, apparently portions
of the chiton and peplus. The countenance is strikingly ex-
pressive of serenity and benevolence. This medallion was pur-
chased from a palace at Florence in the year 1771.
Height 2 ft. 5 in. Width 2 ft. 1 in.
A medallion of a philosopher resembling very much the preced-
ing, perhaps an ancient copy of a portrait of the same person, but
of a more recent date, and of Roman sculpture. It was brought
to England by the late Sir William Stanhope, brother to the Earl
of Chesterfield, who placed it over the chimney piece in the dining
room of his elegant villa at Twickenham, whence it passed to the
collection of Mr. Towneley.
