The Marbles described in the present volume consist of Grteco-
Roman statues, busts, and reliefs, most of which belong to the
Townley Collection, and were formerly placed in the eleventh and
twelfth rooms of the Gallery of Antiquities at the British Museum.
This volume nearly completes the publication of the part of the
collection of sculptures formerly known as the Townley Gallery.
The remaining marbles from this collection, being of inferior
interest as works of art, are reserved for a future volume, in
which they will be published in outline only.
The plates in the present work have been executed by several
eminent engravers from drawings by the late Mr. Corbould.
With reference to the descriptive notices which accompany the
plates, I have to acknowledge the important services rendered by
my colleague Mr. Vaux, by whom the greater part of the text
was prepared, and the aid contributed by Mr. Edmund Oldfield,
late Assistant in the Department of Antiquities, who revised and
corrected the proof sheets of the earlier portion of the work.
