character, containing directions about some rudimentary matters
of drawing and perspective, a knowledge of which he would
have to assume in his more advanced work. This preliminary
book was called the ‘Teaching of Measurement by Rule and
Compass.’ We must first turn aside to bestow upon it a brief
examination.
