H. Lewy in the Jahrb. f. class. Philol. 1893 xxxix. 768 suggests *AvaXos = Avaios) are
unsuccessful. J. Toepffer Attische Genealogie Berlin 1889 p. 39 f. connects the Attic
phratry AvaXfjs and op. cit. p. 40 n. 1 would alter Hesych. v&Xlkos kcOjUt?- Aiovvaios into
AvoXikos Ktb/jLTj- k.t.X. W. Tomaschek in the Sitzungsber. d. /cats. Akad. d. Wiss. in
Wieu Phil.-hist. Classe 1894 cxxx'. 42 f. translates AvaXos by ' der " Rasende, Tolle,
Sturmische"' {6vu, cp. the Bacchic Qvidbes and Hesych. Qvwvtj- 17 Se^A^). But we
cannot, I think, dissociate Hesych. AvaXos' 6 Aibwaos irapd Haiwcnv from Hesych. AiiaXbs'
6 Aibvvcros. May we not conclude that AvaXos means the 'Wet' (devu) and Ai'ctXos the
' Dry ' (auw, avos, avaXeos) ? Cp. ' Ilya the Wet' and ' Ilya the Dry ' {supra i. 184).

the importation of Apollon Aa<pvy]<p6pos from
Thebes by the ' Dionysiac' clan to which the Theban and Attic Aigeidai belonged
(E. Maass in the Gb'tt. Gel. Anz. 1889 cli. 813 ff), though, since AiovvabboTos is a theo-
phoric name of regular formation (W. Pape—G. E. Benseler W'orterbuch der griechischen

actually found (Sosibios frag. 5 {Frag. hist. Gr. ii. 626 Muller) ap. Athen. 678 c tovs

AiovvaoSoTov 'AiroXXeovidras), it might rather have been inferred that the altar in question
was that of a man called Dionysodotos who in the mystic cult of Phlya (on which see
especially J. Toepffer Attische Genealogie Berlin 1889 pp. 39 f., 208 ff.) played—like
Pythagoras {supra p. 221 ff.)—the part of Apollon redivivus. However, it is far from
certain that the title of Apollon was AtovvcrbboTos. It may have been, and probably was,
Aiovvo~o86tt)s (cp. e.g. Zeus IIXovtoSottjs suprai. 503). As such it is quoted and expounded
