260 The Daughters of Kekrops

had by Eos a son Memnon; and here too the dew-connexion re-
appears. When Memnon was slain by Achilles, his mother Eos
wept for him, and in the morning dew-drops we still see her tears1.

Aglauros, Pandrosos, and Herse were alike associated with Zeus.
Their mother was the daughter of Aktaios2; and Aktaios is a cult-
epithet of Zeus3. Possibly Zeus Aktaios, Zeus 'of the Point,' was
at one time worshipped on the high ground of Akte overlooking
the harbours of the Peiraieus4. More probably he drew his title
from Akte, the old name for the whole promontory of Attike6, which
indeed represents an earlier Aktike6. Pandrosos, again, stood m
close relation to Zeus. In the Pandroseion was his altar7; and,
though we must not with O. Gruppe8 assume the existence of a
Zeus Pandrosos, yet we may feel sure that here Zeus the sky-father,

to 'AxdWiov. On this showing tindun was the god or godlike hero of Hittite-speakmg
Cappadocians. Memnon as son of Tithonos implies that Tithonos was known in Anatolia-
Tithonos founded Sousa on the Choaspes (Strab. 728, Diod. 2. 22, cp. Hdt. 5. 53, 7-
Paus. 4. 31. 5) and was worshipped as a god by the Susians (Souid. s.v. 2oi)<rior ovopa

the Etruscan stem tin- denoted both the 'day' and the 'daylight-god' tinia or tina, ">
equivalent of Zeus or Iupiter (S. Bugge op. cit. p. 190 f.). Accordingly, TWai'Ss p'e

inscription on the wrappings of the Agram mummy speaks of the Dawn of the Day-6".

inclined to accept an original connexion between Tindun, *Ttr^cif, TWiovbs, TUun°^
the one hand and Tinia, Tignia on the other. But the whole edifice is a house of ca ^
